New figures reveal that Philippine’s domestic tourism is growing. The number of domestic airline passengers rose more than a fifth in the January to March quarter due to the growing popularity of budget airlines, according to Philippine’s Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB)

According to the CAB, domestic air travelers for the first three months of the year went up by 22.4 percent to 2.4 million over the same period last year.

Cebu Pacific Air occupies the top spot in terms of garnering the most passengers with 1.01 million, a 71.6-percent increase compared to the same period last year, followed by rival Philippine Airlines (PAL) with 938,960 passengers, up from 961,764 last year.

According to published reports, Candice Iyog, Cebu Pacific's vice-president for marketing, attributed the increase in the company's share of the total domestic air passenger market to aggressive and dynamic price offerings

PAL-controlled Air Philippines attracted 253,427 passengers, while Southeast Asian Airlines (SEAIR) carried 49,722. Asian Spirit had 111,359 passengers for the period.

The CAB said the increase in domestic travel was driven by the low fares offered by budget airlines and the summer season. The low fare offered by airline companies helped a lot to increase domestic air travel.

The CAB said Philippine’s air travel industry is likely to grow 7 percent this year.
